Understanding open pores
What it is
Pores are the openings of the oil glands. They do not open and close, they contain no muscle, and nothing shrinks them permanently. That is the first honest thing to say, because an entire market is built on the opposite claim.
Why they look larger
Three things make a pore visible. How much oil the gland produces, which is largely genetic. Debris and dead skin sitting in the opening. And loss of collagen in the skin around it, so the pore loses its support and gapes. Sun damage and age both worsen the third.
What you might notice
Most visible across the nose, the inner cheeks and the forehead. More obvious in oily skin, later in the day, and under harsh overhead light. Usually accompanied by blackheads, which are oxidised debris rather than trapped dirt.
How it is treated
Reduce the oil, keep the openings clear, and rebuild the collagen around them. In practice that means a topical retinoid over months, regular clearing through peels or a hydrafacial, and collagen work with microneedling or laser. Together they make pores markedly less noticeable.
Worth being realistic about
Less visible is the honest goal here, not gone. Pores cannot be closed. The good news is that everything which makes pores less obvious improves texture and fine lines at the same time, so the effort is not narrowly spent.

A course, gradual. Skin is slow, and anyone quoting you a faster number is selling something.
