Understanding botox
What it is
Botulinum toxin is a purified protein injected in very small amounts into specific muscles. It quietens the signal running from nerve to muscle, so the muscle pulls less and the skin above it stops being folded in the same place hundreds of times a day. The lines that folding created then soften.
What it helps with
The lines that come from expression, so the frown between the brows, the horizontal forehead lines and the crow's feet at the outer eye. It also has genuine medical uses she treats with it, including excessive sweating of the palms, soles and underarms, and some forms of migraine.
What happens in the session
She watches your face move first, because where you need it is decided by how you actually use your muscles rather than by a standard map. Then a few injections with a very fine needle. It takes minutes, it stings briefly, and you can drive home and go back to work afterwards.
How the result comes in
Nothing happens for the first two or three days. It comes in between day three and day seven and is fully settled at two weeks, which is when she reviews it in case a small adjustment is needed. It holds for around three to four months and then wears off gradually rather than all at once.
Worth knowing before you book
