Understanding chemical peeling
What it is
A solution applied to the skin for a controlled length of time to remove surface layers in a measured way, so that what grows back is more even. The acid, its strength and the contact time are each chosen deliberately. It is a medical procedure that happens to be quick.
What it helps with
Uneven tone, dullness, congestion, superficial pigmentation and mild texture and scarring. Deeper peels reach further and do more, at the cost of real downtime. In brown skin the choice of peel matters more than it does in fair skin, because the wrong one leaves pigmentation behind.
What happens in the session
The skin is cleansed and prepared, then the solution is applied and timed, often in layers, while she watches how your skin actually responds rather than following a clock alone. You feel warmth and stinging that builds and then eases. Fifteen to thirty minutes, sometimes with a neutralising step at the end.
How the result comes in
Redness for a day or two, then light flaking from around day three to day seven with a superficial peel. Skin looks brighter once the flaking finishes. It is a course of three to six spaced a few weeks apart, because a series of measured peels beats one aggressive one.
Worth knowing before you book
Strict sun protection afterwards is not optional, particularly in this climate, because unprotected skin after a peel is exactly how pigmentation gets created rather than removed. Do not pick or pull the flaking. Tell her if you get cold sores or if you are taking isotretinoin.
