Understanding microneedling
What it is
A device with very fine needles makes thousands of controlled micro punctures in the skin. Each is a tiny deliberate injury, and the repair your skin runs in response lays down new collagen. The point of the treatment is the healing rather than the needling.
What it helps with
Acne scars, particularly rolling and boxcar scars, general texture, pores that look enlarged, and fine lines. It is one of the better options for scarring in brown skin, because it works mechanically rather than with heat and so carries a lower risk of leaving pigmentation behind.
What happens in the session
Numbing cream for around thirty minutes, then the device is passed over the area at a depth chosen for the site and the problem. It feels like sandpaper under pressure. Around thirty minutes of treatment, sometimes combined with plasma from your own blood in the same visit.
How the result comes in
You look as though you have moderate sunburn for one to three days, occasionally with pinpoint bruising. The real change is collagen, which the body builds slowly, so it is three to six sessions four weeks apart and the result continues improving for months after the last one.
Worth knowing before you book
Home rollers are not the same treatment, and used on acne prone skin they spread infection. It is not done over active acne, infection or a flaring condition. Sun protection afterwards, and leave active acids out of your routine for a few days either side.
