Understanding dermal fillers
What it is
Filler is a gel of hyaluronic acid, a sugar your skin already makes and which holds water. Placed in the right layer it restores volume where the face has lost it. It is not permanent and it can be dissolved if needed, which is a safety feature worth understanding before you have any.
What it helps with
Hollows under the eye, flattened cheeks, folds running from nose to mouth, a chin or jawline that has softened, and lips that have thinned with time. The best use of it is putting back what has gone rather than adding what was never there, and that is what keeps a face looking like itself.
What happens in the session
Your face is assessed and marked while you sit upright, because it behaves differently lying down. Numbing cream first, then placement with a needle or a blunt cannula depending on the area. Fifteen to forty minutes. The anatomy is planned around carefully, because significant vessels run through these regions.
How the result comes in
You see it immediately, although there is swelling for the first few days and bruising is common, particularly under the eye. It settles fully at around two weeks. Depending on the product and the site it lasts somewhere between nine and eighteen months.
Worth knowing before you book
The serious complication, though a rare one, is filler entering an artery, and it is the reason placement is planned rather than rushed. Severe pain, skin going white or dusky, or any change in vision means going straight back to her or to an emergency department rather than waiting to see whether it settles. Ask whoever treats you what they would do about that, here or anywhere else.
