Understanding laser for acne
What it is
Laser and light based treatment for acne works on the parts of the process that creams reach poorly, targeting the bacteria involved and reducing the activity of the oil gland itself. It is used as part of a plan rather than as a replacement for one.
What it helps with
Inflammatory acne, the red painful kind, and acne that has not settled with the usual topical and oral routes. It also helps the redness left behind once spots heal, which is often what people are actually unhappy about by the time they come in.
What happens in the session
The skin is cleansed and your eyes are shielded. The handpiece is passed over the area with cooling, and each pulse feels like a warm flick against the skin. Fifteen to thirty minutes depending on how much is being treated.
How the result comes in
Redness for a few hours to a day. Acne responds across a course spaced a few weeks apart rather than after a single visit, and the improvement is usually clearest through the second half of the course.
Worth knowing before you book
Settings that are safe on one skin type will burn another, so your skin type is assessed properly first, and that matters more here than in many places. It is not used while you are taking isotretinoin. Sun protection between sessions is part of the treatment rather than advice attached to it.
