Understanding PRP therapy
What it is
Platelet rich plasma made from your own blood and injected into the scalp. The platelets carry growth factors, and delivering them around the follicle aims to lengthen the growing phase and thicken hairs that have become fine. It is one of her stated special interests.
What it helps with
Pattern thinning in men and women where the follicles are still present but have shrunk. It works best in earlier thinning and alongside medical treatment rather than instead of it. It cannot regrow hair from an area that is completely bald, because there is nothing left there to work on.
What happens in the session
Blood is taken from your arm, spun for around ten minutes, and the plasma is injected across the thinning area with a fine needle. Numbing is used and it takes thirty to forty five minutes. The scalp feels sore and tight for about a day afterwards.
How the result comes in
Shedding usually settles first, which is the earliest sign it is working, followed by thickening over three to six months. It is a course of four to six sessions a month apart, then maintenance roughly every six months, because stopping entirely lets the ground be lost again.
Worth knowing before you book
It is the same procedure whoever is having it, and there is no separate version for women whatever the marketing says. Results depend on your general health, so anaemia and thyroid problems are corrected first. It is avoided in active scalp infection and in certain blood disorders.
