Male and female pattern loss, investigated first
In plain terms
Understanding hair loss
What it is
Hair loss is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, in the same way a fever is. Several very different processes make hair thin or shed, and they need different treatment. So the useful question is never how to stop hair loss, it is which kind of hair loss this is.
Why it happens
Pattern loss is genetic and hormone driven, giving a receding hairline in men and a widening parting with thinning through the crown in women. Sudden diffuse shedding usually starts two to three months after an illness, a delivery, surgery, a crash diet or severe stress. Iron deficiency, thyroid disease and polycystic ovaries are common contributors and all three are treatable.
What you might notice
Hair coming out in the shower and on the pillow in handfuls, which usually points to shedding rather than pattern loss. A parting that has widened or a ponytail that has thinned, which points the other way. Patches, scaling, pain or a smooth shiny scalp, all of which change the diagnosis and need to be examined.
How it is treated
An examination and blood tests come first, because the cause decides everything that follows. Depending on what they show, treatment may mean correcting a deficiency, treating the thyroid, topical and oral medication, or plasma therapy into the scalp. Most plans use two or three of these together.
When to get it seen
Early, because follicles dormant for a long time are much harder to bring back than ones still struggling. If there is scarring, redness, pain, or shiny scalp with no visible follicle openings, that should be seen promptly, since scarring loss is permanent once it has happened.
