In plain terms

Understanding laser hair removal

  1. What it is

The laser targets pigment in the hair, which absorbs the light, heats up and damages the follicle producing it. It only works on hair currently in its growing phase, and at any given moment only a portion of your hair is. That single fact is the entire reason this takes a course.

  2. What it helps with

Unwanted hair on the face, underarms, arms, legs, back and bikini area. It works best where dark coarse hair sits against lighter skin, because contrast is what the laser reads. Fine, grey or blond hair responds poorly, and it is only fair to say so before you pay for a course.

  3. What happens in the session

The area is shaved and your eyes are shielded. The handpiece passes over the skin with cooling, and each pulse feels like a warm elastic band snapping against you. A small area takes minutes and a large one up to an hour. A test patch comes first on skin being treated for the first time.

  4. How the result comes in

Treated hairs shed across one to three weeks. It is six to eight sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the area, and most people see meaningful reduction from around the third. Occasional top ups keep it, because this is long term reduction rather than permanent removal.

  5. Worth knowing before you book

Settings that are safe on one skin type will burn another, so skin type is assessed before anything is fired. No waxing, threading or plucking between sessions, since the root has to be there. No sun or tanning for two weeks either side, and it is not done in pregnancy.
