Understanding skin cancer screening
What it is
A skin check is a systematic examination of your moles and lesions using a dermatoscope, a magnifier with polarised light that shows the pigment pattern beneath the surface. It reads the structure of a lesion rather than only its appearance, which is what the naked eye cannot do.
What it helps with
Moles that have changed, new lesions appearing in adulthood, spots that bleed, itch or will not heal, and a general check if you have many moles, heavy sun exposure or a family history. Brown skin is not exempt. The overall risk is lower, but the cancers that do appear favour the palms, the soles and the skin under a nail, and they are found late precisely because nobody thinks to look there.
What happens in the session
She examines the lesion and the skin around it, then looks at your other moles for comparison, because your own pattern is the most useful reference there is. Anything that does not fit is photographed, measured, and either put on a set monitoring interval or biopsied at that visit.
How the result comes in
Most lesions are confirmed benign during the visit and you leave knowing. If a biopsy is taken, the histopathology report usually returns within about a week, and she will take you through what it says and what follows from it.
Worth knowing before you book
This is the one thing on her list where waiting has a real cost. A changing mole examined early is a small procedure. The same mole a year later is a different conversation. Nothing suspicious is reassured away without a biopsy.
