Hives, itching and contact reactions
In plain terms
Understanding skin allergies & rashes
What it is
An allergic skin reaction is your immune system responding to something it has decided is a threat. Hives are a reaction in the deeper skin that rises and fades within hours. Contact dermatitis is a reaction where something touched the skin, and it holds the shape of whatever touched it.
Why it happens
Contact reactions come from metals, fragrance, hair dye, cosmetics, rubber and plants, and they appear exactly where contact occurred. Hives are more often triggered by infection, medicines, heat, pressure or nothing identifiable at all, which is frustrating to hear and genuinely common.
What you might notice
Raised itchy welts that move around the body and each fade within a day in hives. A rash with a clear border matching a watch strap, an earring or the line of a cosmetic in contact dermatitis. Swelling of the lips or eyelids, which needs to be taken seriously rather than waited out.
How it is treated
Finding the trigger is the real work, through careful history and sometimes patch testing, because avoiding something beats suppressing it indefinitely. Antihistamines control symptoms at proper doses rather than the single tablet most people try. Chronic hives lasting beyond six weeks have specific treatments that work well.
When to get it seen
Swelling of the tongue, throat or lips, or any trouble breathing or swallowing, is an emergency and needs a hospital straight away rather than a clinic appointment. Short of that, come if hives have run beyond six weeks, if a rash keeps returning to the same spot, or if you are taking antihistamines most days simply to stay comfortable.
